Fifteen.

A Single Life

Amithayus, Seattle, 2066 06:07 AM - Border Crossing

Neele nodded as Zhan Tao ended the call on his ComUhr. He held Alicia's hand for a moment longer than Neele, then they gently let go and closed her eyes. "I will never forget you," she whispered. Then she turned to Zhan Tao. "What do we do now?"

"We're heading to a rendezvous point outside the city.

There, we'll meet an old friend who can hopefully help us get out of Amithayus. But we have to be quick; things are getting worse by the minute. The entire city is becoming a powder keg, ready to explode. Also, Dr. Caldwell's army is still after us; we can't take any risks. We need to lie low for a while." Neele nodded, understanding the gravitas of what Zhan Tao was implying. They were far from safe, and their next move was crucial.

The autopilot navigated the vehicle through the narrow, war-torn streets of Mincheng. The sounds of war gradually faded, but the danger was far from over.

Zhan Tao closely watched the surroundings,

occasionally giving directions to the autopilot.

Fighting the rising panic, Neele sat silently next to Alicia, who now lay peacefully on the back seat. She had to stay strong for Alicia and for herself.

After several minutes that felt like hours, they reached the edge of Mincheng. Zhan Tao took manual control of the vehicle and turned onto a narrow side street leading to an abandoned industrial area. He stopped the car infront of an old, half-collapsed building and turned off the engine.

"Where are we?" Neele asked, looking out the car window.

"This is the old crossing between Amithayus and Seattle before a wall was built before the war forced us to shut ourselves off. Not many people in the Korean District know about this place, and only a handful of the Japanese Quarter knows the way here."

Neele nodded, got out of the vehicle, and looked around. The area was quiet; only the distant echoes of explosions and gunfire reminded them that the fight was not over.

She walked to the edge of the ruined building and peered inside. All she could see was darkness.

Behind the building, she could faintly make out the

silhouettes of Mincheng and the dim glow of lights and flickering flames coming inexorably closer.

Neele and Zhan Tao carefully lifted Alicia out of the vehicle and carried her to the small hut they had chosen as their meeting point. Zhan Tao helped her safely stow Alicia's body inside, as they lay her in the smaller second room on a old bed which was installed into the wall.
